The fourth annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Morgan City's Cypress Park, 611 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. The St. Mary Chamber of Commerce and VFW Post 4222 of Morgan City are hosting the event.

Last Friday the Franklin Fire Department received a call from Ted Mire on La. 182 who reported that he has an old telephone pole on his property that wood peckers and wood ducks use as a nesting site. Mire said a wood duck hen was stuck and in distress. Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Hildreth responded with an engine company and firefighter Andrew Stewart III to assist. The hen came out of her nest about 15 feet up the pole and was hanging by her neck. Hildreth said she apparently collected some twine for nesting and became entangled. They raised a ladder and Hildreth, above, and below at right with the duck and Mire, climbed up to cut the cord from around the duck’s neck. She was in obvious distress and exhausted from her ordeal, he said, but he finished removing the twine and Mire released her to drink and feed. Mother and brood are reportedly doing fine.

The Marine Corps League, St. Mary Detachment held its 14th annual poker run Saturday. The event also served as the organization’s kickoff for its annual Toys for Tots drive. Riders who participated in the poker run could either donate their entry fee to be used for the Toys for Tots drive or the area detachment of the Marine Corps League, which will help with operational expenses, according to David Martin, commandant for the area Marine Corps’ detachment. As part of their entry fee, riders were required to bring an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots drive. Also, plate lunches were sold later in the day, which benefitted the Marine Corps League’s yearly operational expenses, Martin said. The Toys for Tots drive will continue until Christmas Day. Bins will be located at various businesses throughout the area including most banks and dollar stores. All toys collected will stay in St. Mary Parish and will be distributed to youngsters, Martin said.
