The LSU Track & Field teams will open NCAA East Preliminary Round action in Jacksonville, Florida, today at Hodges Stadium at the University of North Florida. The No. 3-ranked Tigers and No. 8-ranked Lady Tigers will compete with their goal of earning their spot in the national semifinals.
The Red Ribbon Committee recently held its traditional “Passing the Ribbon” presentation. In keeping with tradition previous chair Blaise Smith, left, “passed the ribbon” to the incoming chair Scott Berry. In center is Gidget Everitt, Safe and Drug-Free Schools at-risk interventionist.

Beacon is godsend for stranded fisherman

Mark Bernucho of Control Fire & Safety in Morgan City holds his Ocean Signal personal locator beacon in his right hand. Bernucho used the beacon Friday after his boat’s engine failed at Point au Fer Island near the Gulf. A Coast Guard helicopter responded and lowered the radio in Bernucho’s left hand to him on a weighted line.

They’re small, bright and fit into the palm.

Berwick bike winner

Each school year, Duval Arthur, a Berwick town councilman and and director of homeland security for St. Mary Parish, donates several bicycles to Berwick Elementary for rewards and incentives.
