Morgan City opened its 2015 regular football season with a 26-7 victory against Berwick in a battle of area schools. Meanwhile, Patterson fell on the road to Central Lafourche, 24-13. Patterson entered its contest ranked No. 5 in the initial Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A poll released earlier this week.

Stefano Guarisco took off offensively and the Central Catholic Eagles clamped down defensively to lead the Morgan City-based squad’s rally in the first half en route to a 54-27 victory Thursday.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday to open the 80th Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival, which continues through Monday. Among those present were Festival Queen Anna Washburn, Children’s Day King Andrew Decondris, Children’s Day Queen Brenna Laubach, board members and workers of the Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival, Morgan City Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi, Berwick Mayor Louis Ratcliff, parish officials, family, and friends.

Frosty morning in St. Mary Parish

Frost was prevalent across St. Mary Parish this morning. The National Weather Service reported a low of 36 degrees was recorded at the Patterson airport. Lows of 27 Wednesday night and 33 Thursday night are in the forecast.. Tonight’s low is expected to be 43.

Fire at Bayou Vista hotel

Bayou Vista and Berwick firefighters responded to a hotel fire at the Plantation Inn in Bayou Vista Tuesday morning. Bayou Vista firefighter Josh Ashley said the 11:45 a.m. fire started in Room 110, destroying the room’s contents and causing moderate damage to the room. The origin and cause remain under investigation.
