Report: Bayou Chene project’s damage understated

The St. Mary Levee District installed a temporary flood protection structure on Bayou Chene in January to protect the area from flooding. Levee district officials are working to construct a permanent floodgate on Bayou Chene, but the project has met opposition from Avoca LLC, which owns land on nearby Avoca Island. A consultant hired by Avoca says the levee district understated the impact that the Bayou Chene project will have on the island. (Submitted photo)

A report from a wetlands permitting consultant says the Bayou Chene Flood Control and Diversion Project will hurt Avoca Island more than the St. Mary Levee District determined.
