Franklin pump station construction set

An update from engineers for the construction of the Franklin Canal Pump Sta-tion came at Thursday’s meeting of the St. Mary Levee District.

Executive director Hilary Thibodeaux reported that the start date for the project is Oct. 22 and that it should be completed in June. Miller Engineering is in charge of the project.

The project will be built so that four pumps could be housed at the station, even if fewer than four are installed. The pumps would be powered by natural gas.

“It’s going to be more than adequate to handle that particular area for a storm event,” Thibodeaux said.

Thibodeaux also reported about the approval of grant money from Economic Development Authority of the U.S. Department of Commerce, which was announced in mid-September.

“We were awarded the $1.8 million to use for engineering services for the Bayou Chene project,” he said.

Levee district president Bill Hidalgo asked for clarifi-cation that the district would “receive those funds as we spend them.”

Thibodeaux said that the funds would be reimbursed after expenses.

Along with the Terrebonne Levee & Conservation District, the St. Mary Levee District is a joint applicant for the development authority money.
