Franklin Golden Age Club to host Christmas party Tuesday

Thirty-four members were present at the monthly meeting of the Franklin Golden Age Club held Tuesday, November 15 at the Franklin Recreation Center. Interim Club President Floyd LeBlanc opened the meeting. EmmaDel Broussard said the prayer and Floyd LeBlanc led the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes and treasury report from the September meeting were dispensed. There was no formal meeting in October as the club held its fall cake bingo.

The Annual Memorial Service was held for recently deceased members of the club. The memorial service honors the memory of club members that passed away during the last year. They are also memorialized at the State Golden Age Convention held each year.

Inez Borne was eulogized by her daughter, Charlene Borne. Inez was married to the late Charles Borne Jr. and they were the parents of five children. Present for the ceremony were her daughters Charlene Borne and Bridget Borne, her daughter-in-law Marilyn Borne, her granddaughter Savannah Soule and friend of the family, Jane Miller. Her son Charles Borne III was unable to attend. Inez was also the mother of the late Michael Borne and the late Rebecca Borne. Charlene lit the candle that burned in her mother’s memory.

Marion Melancon was eulogized by her son, Jim Melancon. Widowed at a very young age, Marion was married to the late Severin Melancon and they were parents of one son. Her daughter-in-law, Debbie Melancon, was unable to attend. Marion also had two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A long time member of the Franklin Golden Age Club, she was once voted “Member of the Year”. Jim lit the candle that burned in his mother’s memory.

Joyce Champagne was eulogized by her daughter Gidget Champagne. Joyce and the late Floyd Champagne were parents of four children. She also had six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. At the time of her death, she was currently serving as club president for the Franklin Golden Age Club. She was also 2010 Franklin Golden Age Queen. Joyce was active in the American Legion Post 63 and also the VFW Post 4201. Present for the ceremony were Joyce’s daughters Connie C. Broussard and Gidget Champagne and her granddaughters Michelle Verret, Ashley Pillaro and Makynzie Broussard. Also attending were Joyce’s great grandson Kamryn Verret and her niece, Judy Cranche. Gidget lit the candle that burned in her mother’s memory.

Mable Alleman lit the candle that burned in memory of Ouida Clement. Ouida was married to Lenis J. Clement and they were the parents of two sons and two daughters. They also had eleven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

At the end of the service, family members were presented with a white rose and the candle that burned in memory of their loved one. The necrology committee, which presented the memorial service, was led by EmmaDel Broussard, chairperson, with the assistance of Mable Alleman. The members appreciate their efforts in making the memorial service such a success.

Election of officers was held at the meeting with interim club president Floyd LeBlanc elected as Club President. Remaining in office were Vice-president Linda Darce and Secretary EmmaDel Broussard, both unopposed. Virgie Price offered to serve as club treasurer with no opposition. Installation of officers will be held at the January meeting.

The Lafayette Golden Age Club Coronation Ball was held December 3 at the UL Student Building in Lafayette. It was also announced that April 12, 13 and 14, 2012 is the date for the next State Golden Age Convention and it will be held at the Crown Plaza in Lafayette.

The Center of Hope Christmas Party will be held in December. Center of Hope was adopted by the club years ago. All Golden Age Club members are encouraged to attend. Music will be furnished by Howard Winston, Tom Randazzo and Sam Yoshida.

Members welcomed Kerney Simoneaux as a new member of the club.

Celebrating birthdays in November are Sue Payne, Yvonne Roy, Carolyn Tutela, Bobbie Vaccarella and Karl Young.

The Christmas Party for the Franklin Golden Age Club will be held Tuesday, December 20 and will include a covered dish meal. Secret Pals will be revealed at the meeting and a drawing will be held for those participating in Secret Pals for the new year.
