Franklin art walk participation doubles; slated for Aug. 13

Twice the number of artists have joined the upcoming “Promenade d’art de Franklin” to be held in downtown Franklin Aug. 13 from 6-9 p.m.

Office of Development Director Marla Chirdon told the city council Tuesday that entries have grown to 24, over 12 last year. “I had to turn artists away,” she said. “That’s not something I wanted to do, but we had no more space.”

Artists have been partnered with merchants, where their work will be displayed.

A student jazz quartet from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts has been secured, and will be set up near Floors Etc. from 6-8 p.m.

“It’s something to be proud of,” Chirdon said. “It’s certainly taken a spin in a direction that I never anticipated, and I expect great crowds. We also have the New Iberia Art guild represented at Main Street Café, five members displaying, and also have some artists from the Morgan City area.”

The youngest artists are an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old, Chirdon said.

Also Tuesday, Office of Permits and Inspections Director Blake Steiner proposed city council action on three derelict properties on Talbot Street.

The council first agreed to appoint local attorney Joseph Tabb to “represent absentee owners in an effort to condemn dilapidated structures in the city.”

Steiner then recommended the property at 204 Talbot St. be referred to Tabb to attempt to serve notice on the owners for a hearing at the next council meeting to condemn the structure. The council agreed.

He then said that property at 308 Talbot St. is owned by the Lutheran Benevolent Society, and they have requested 30 days to bring the property into compliance with city ordinance. The council agreed.

Lastly, the property owner at 318 Talbot St. could not be contacted. Steiner recommended Tabb attempt to serve notice of a hearing at the next meeting for condemnation of the property.
