Former UNO star makes Triple-A All-Star game

OMAHA, Neb. - For the second year in a row, former University of New Orleans and Jesuit standout Johnny Giavotella will spend his mid-season break contesting an All-Star Game.

A year after participating in the Double-A level Texas League All-Star Game, Giavotella will start at second base for the Pacific Coast League (PCL) in the 2011 Triple-A All-Star Game.

The contest pitting the PCL and the International League will take place on July 13th in Salt Lake City, Utah. Privateer fans can tune into the action on the MLB Network for the game, which will begin at 8 p.m. CT.

Giavotella is hitting .323 with five home runs and 53 RBIs for Triple-A Omaha, the top minor league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Through 78 games, Giavotella leads the Storm Chasers with 105 hits while adding 22 doubles and nine stolen bases to his count.

The rising prospect leads the PCL in several defensive categories including total chances, putouts, assists and double plays. He also ranks third in field percentage amongst second basemen with a .979 mark.

Giavotella batted .322 with 168 hits, 92 runs and 65 RBIs last season for Double-A Northwest Arkansas in 2010, earning a place in the Arizona Fall League.

A first-team preseason All-America selection ahead of his junior season at UNO, Giavotella hit .354 in 2008 to help the Privateers claim a berth in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.

The previous year, he hit .385 with 15 home runs and 65 RBIs to earn selection as a third-team All-American. Giavotella finished his three years on the Lakefront in 2008 with a .363 career batting average and 32 home runs.

Giavotella joins Chicago Cubs manager Mike Quade as former UNO players to participate in All-Star Games this summer. Quade was named to the National League coaching staff earlier this week for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
