MORGAN CITY, La. -- My name is James Fontenot and I am humbly announcing my candidacy for Morgan City Council, District 4. I was born and raised in Morgan City by my parents, James and Shirlene Fontenot. I have been married to Jennifer Stillwell Fontenot for the past 18 years. We have two children, Logan and Ainsley. I graduated from Morgan City High School in 1990. I earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from USL in 1995.
I have been working with the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for more than 15 years. I started with the D.A.’s Office as a probation officer and for the past 12 years I have been the supervisor of the Pretrial Diversion Program. I am currently serving on the Board of Directors for the professionals in Pretrial Services Association. I am also commissioned by the State of Louisiana as a notary public.
My family and I attend Immanuel Baptist Church in Morgan City. I have been volunteering with the Upward Basketball Program as a coach and referee for the past 10 years, which is a Christian-based basketball league in Morgan City. I have spent most of my adult life volunteering at different organizations to help our community.
I have been serving on the Parks and Recreation Commission for the City of Morgan City for many years. During this time I have served as an adviser to the following committees: baseball, football, basketball, softball and the Lake End Park committee. I coached soccer with AYSO for six years. I am also a member of the Atchafalaya Chapter of API and Ducks Unlimited.
I have enjoyed volunteering for activities for the St. Mary Parish Council on Aging and the St. Mary Parish Chapter of the AARP. I am a member of the St. Mary Parish Association of Retarded Citizens, serving on the Board of Directors for four years and president for two of those years.
I am asking the citizens of District 4 to allow me the opportunity to serve you as your councilman. I want to work with our new mayor and council members to help our business community so that private enterprise can supply jobs for our families. Some of the major issues that I plan to work on as your councilman are: economic development, residential development, public safety, the concerns of our senior citizens and activities for our youth.
I appreciate all of the encouragement, prayers and support I am receiving from my family, friends and the citizens of Morgan City during this campaign. Please vote James Fontenot, No. 61, for City Council, District 4 on Nov. 6.
