Fishing rodeo will be held Saturday
The first Morgan City Oilfield Fishing Rodeo will be held Saturday.
The event will consist of fishing from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. with weigh-ins beginning at 2 p.m. at the Patterson Civic Center. Participants must be at the weigh-in line by 4 p.m.
Fishermen will compete in categories for redfish, bass, catfish and other big fish.
The Morgan City Oilfield Fishing Rodeo is a non-profit organization consisting of businesses in the tri-parish area that have become sponsors of the event. While the majority of the businesses in this event include oil and gas industries, some other businesses also are part of the membership.
Morgan City Oilfield Fishing Rodeo spokeswoman Tammy Stephens said that A.J. Cannata, who spearheaded this rodeo, wanted to see the locals who participate in the Houma Oilman’s Fishing Rodeo, participate in a local rodeo.
Cannata got some other businesses to participate, and the rodeo concept has come to fruition.
As of this morning, about 120 fishermen were entered to participate and about 50 boats, Stephens said. Entries are being accepted today through 8 p.m.
Those participating in Saturday’s event can launch at any St. Mary Parish boat launch and can fish waterways in the St. Mary Parish area.
All proceeds, after rodeo expenses, will be donated to one or more charities, Stephens said.
She said that next year, organizers hope to expand the event to include a golf tournament on one day and a fishing tournament the next.
