Fern Jeanette Bryson
Fern Jeanette Bryson of Morgan City passed on to her eternal reward in Christ Friday morning, July 22, 2011, at the age of 95.
She was born the first of six children in 1915 to Franklin and Beulah Lewis in Story, Okla., where she graduated from Capital Hill High School and attended Bethany Women’s College. During this time she taught a children’s Sunday School class at Kentucky Avenue Baptist Church and later assisted in their youth department.
She resided in Patterson and then Morgan City since 1963, though prior to that time period she and her first husband lived throughout the Southwest and Rocky Mountain states due to her first husband’s employment in the petroleum industry.
In the Tri-Cities area she worked for Drs. Askew and Gadow and assisted in secretarial work for her church. She also volunteered her services for her children’s different school functions. Jeanette was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker for her family, along with donating time and labor to her local church, where she served in secretarial capacities and on pulpit committees. She regularly attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Morgan City until failing health kept her homebound.
Special thanks to her caregivers, Jackie LeJeune, Beverly Picou, Teche Regional sixth-floor staff, and Southern Care Hospice Group.
She is survived by three sisters, Louise Clark of Missouri City, Texas, Ruby Bigelow of San Diego, and Ellen Lyons of Charlotte, N.C.; three children, Sherman Whiting and spouse Sylvia Whiting of Morgan City, Patricia Ann Whiting of Missouri City, Texas, and William “Joe” Whiting and spouse Becky Whiting of Morgan City; and her grandchildren, Dewey Sauce, Samantha Sauce Garcia, Amy Whiting Deslattes, Beth Whiting Dupuy, Stacy Whiting Spitale, and Sarah Whiting. Jeanette is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin and Beulah Lewis; two husbands, Arvin J. Whiting and Ray J. Bryson; her sister, Margaruite Mueller; and a brother, Glenn Lewis. She often said, “God blessed me with two wonderful husbands in my lifetime.”
