Evangeline Downs to feature state’s first ever turf race for quarter horses
OPELOUSAS — Turf racing for Quarter Horses makes its debut in the state of Louisiana on Friday evening, December 16 when a field of eight is set to square off in the $35,000 Au Revoir Stakes. The event, an overnight stakes race written by Evangeline Downs Racing Secretary Coleman Lloyd at the request of several quarter horse connections is for quarter horses that are ages three years old and older and is set at the distance of 870 yards.
While turf racing for quarter horses has never been contested in Louisiana and is a rarity in the United States, it is a common practice for Thoroughbreds competing in the same racing jurisdictions. In fact, turf racing at the three tracks in Louisiana that have a grass course (Evangeline Downs, The Fairgrounds and Louisiana Downs) annually accounts for more than 20% of the racing product.
Lloyd stated “Turf racing is ever so popular locally and across the country with both horsemen and racing fans and we thought it would be a perfect match with the speed and excitement of quarter horse racing.”
Carded as the 8th race on Friday’s ten-race program, the approximate post time for the Au Revoir Stakes is 8:35 pm central time.
