Eagles win opening game of Sunkist Shootout

Central Catholic’s boys basketball team faced Class 5A Archbishop Rummel (8-6) on Tuesday in the first game of the Sunkist Shootout at St. Thomas More High School.
The Eagles (9-1) came away with a 51-43 win to set up a meeting between two Class 1A powers with CCHS taking on Metairie Park Country Day (6-7) today at 4 p.m.
Dontrell Brown led the Eagles with 17 points including a three-pointer; Lloyd Grogan and Tyler Hoffpauir had 10 each; Josh Singleton had eight; Brent Green added three; Nicholas Case had two; and Jovon Johnson added a free throw.
Country Day beat Teurlings Catholic (9-8) on Tuesday 47-39 with Travis Avery and Scott Plaisance scoring 16 points each.
Ellender (11-5) and Comeaux (10-6) faced off in the early game on Tuesday with the Patriots winning 70-64 behind two strong performances from Gilbert Talbot (23 points) and Houston Chatman (24 points).
Ellender moves on to face St. Thomas Aquinas (12-3) at 5:30 p.m. today.
STA beat Natchez 58-44 on Tuesday with Steven Wronkoski leading the team with 18 points.
Lionheart Leslie and Elijah McGuire led Vandebilt Catholic (10-4) to a 61-55 win over St. Louis (5-9). Leslie had 22 and McGuire finished with 21. Vandebilt will play New Albany from Mississippi today at 8:30 p.m.
Episcopal School of Acadiana (10-8) lost its opening game to Northwood (5-9) 48-28 with 10 players from Northwood get-ting on the scoresheet.
Northwood will face hosts St. Thomas More (12-2) today at 7 p.m.
The Cougars scored the biggest win of the tournament’s opening day in a 76-46 win over Carver.
Charlie Padgett led STM with 17 points, Ben Veazey had 16 and Trey Touchet had 10.
Lumberjills down MCHS
Patterson’s girls basketball team held off a late charge by Morgan City for a 38-32 win on Tuesday in Patterson.
The Lumberjills were led by Claudia Fine’s 13 points and four steals; Tala Johnson had nine points, 10 rebounds and two steals; Keisha Kinchen had eight points, three rebounds and five steals; Chynna Williams had four points, two rebounds and a steal; Nakia Brooks had two points, three rebounds and a steal; and Tiera Butler had two points, two rebounds and a steal.
Patterson (5-8) opens District 9-3A play at home on Friday against North Vermilion (7-5) at 5 p.m.
Morgan City (6-5) will have several days off before travelling to Catholic High of New Iberia (3-10) on Tuesday.
