DONALD ‘DUCK’ GODFREY

Lafayette - Funeral services were held Saturday, August 31, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Saint James Baptist Church for Donald Godfrey, 57, affectionately known as “Duck,” who heard his name when the Almighty graciously whispered “assume your role as my angel” on Monday, August 26, 2013, at 7:05 a.m., at his residence.
“Duck” was the brother of former Banner-Tribune managing editor, Rev. Paul J. Godfrey.
Visitation was held Saturday from 7 a.m. until time of service at the St. James Baptist Church. Services were conducted by the Rev. Sam Lofton.
“Duck” was born on Dec. 20, 1955 to Mrs. Ezola Harrison Godfrey and Mr. Brace B. Godfrey Sr. of Ville Platte. He married Elaine Lewis Godfrey on August 30, 1986. To this wonderful twenty-seven year union, one son, Dexter J. Lewis and one daughter, DaMeaka T. Lewis, were born. Donald enjoyed developing young males, athletically and academically, and fulfilled this as a volunteer coach for Paul Breaux Middle School’s football program. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, where he became a very proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
“Duck” leaves to mourn and cherish his memory his wife of 27 years, Elaine M. Godfrey; four children, Dana (John) Adams of Lafayette, Donald (Lolita) Godfrey Jr. of Shreveport, Dexter (Shalondra) Lewis and DaMeaka Lewis, both of Lafayette. Additionally, he leaves seven grandchildren, DaMarkus Adams, Darien Adams, Devin Adams, DaMarian Adams, Kayleb Lewis, Dylan Lewis and Zania Godfrey; three sisters, Janet R. Godfrey of Ville Platte, Pricilla G. Charles of Lafayette and Lisa (Christopher) Slaughter of Ville Platte; a sister-in-law, Cynthia T. Godfrey of Baton Rouge; three brothers, Curtis L. Godfrey of Greenwood, Mississippi, David (Pat) Godfrey of Houston, Texas, and the Rev. Paul (Marian) Godfrey of Baldwin; one godchild, Michael Charles; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brace B. Godfrey Sr. and Ezola H. Godfrey; one brother, Brace B. Godfrey Jr. and one sister, Ophelia Godfrey.
Interment followed in the Calvary Cemetery on Carmel Avenue in Lafayette.
