DeSoto Parish basketball coach arrested on sex charge
MANSFIELD (AP) — The North DeSoto High School head boys’ basketball coach has been arrested on charges relating to inappropriate behavior with a 14-year-old female student.
DeSoto Parish sheriff’s Lt. Robert Davidson said 46-year-old Robert L. Bender, of Gloster, was arrested at the school on Thursday. He was booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center on a charge of indecent behavior with a juvenile and on a warrant for issuing worthless checks.
Bender, who has been employed since August 2007 also as a special education teacher, submitted his resignation from the school district last month. His departure was to be effective in May when classes concluded for the year, said schools Superintendent Cade Brumley, who placed Bender on administrative leave.
“We learned of allegations of misconduct and have taken strong measures to ensure the safety of our students while also affording due process to our employee,” Brumley said. “I’m committed to the well-being of our students and any attempt to jeopardize their safety will always be assertively addressed by my office.”
Davidson declined to release additional details about the case against Bender.
