Couvillier selected as St. Mary AARP Father’s Day king
St. Mary AARP recognized Father’s Day during its June 4 meeting held at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center, Home of St. Mary AARP.
Felix Couvillier was crowned Father’s Day King for a Day. He received gifts from the AARP board of directors. Feeling humbled, Couvillier thanked his subjects for “making my day.”
The meeting opened with a prayer by Joe Pizzuto and the Star Spangled Banner sung by Gordon Smith.
Members were treated to jumbo hot dogs and chili provided by A&M Cooling. Dessert of ice-cold watermelon provided by Quality Diesel. Birthday and anniversary cake was donated by M C Bank and coffee was compliments of MidSouth Bank.
St. Mary AARP President Paul Vella was welcomed back by members following his recovery from knee surgery. Vella thanked everyone for their prayers and support through his “very painful recovery.”
Entertainment for the evening was provided by the AARP Players. They presented a one-act play titled “The Anniversary” written by K.J. “Bob” Clement and directed by AnnEtta Lombardo.
Starring in the play was Gerry and Linda Fabre as Ted and Alice, and Ward and Sandra Mensman as Bob and Carole.
The play was about Bob and Carole celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and was a big success.

—The next AARP dance will be Saturday, from 7-11 p.m., at the center on Chennault Street in Morgan City. Advance tickets are $6; at the door, $10. Gary “T” will perform.
—Phil Haney will sponsor a Senior Seminar at Cypress Bayou Casino Pavilion on June 19 starting at 11 a.m. Guest speakers will be District Judge John E. Conery and State Sen. Fred Mills Jr. Contact St. Mary Council on Aging to reserve a seat.
—The next St. Mary AARP Chapter Meal will be June 25 at 6 p.m. at Lewa Gardens in Morgan City. For tickets call 384-2277. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
—Bingo is played every Wednesday at the center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hamburger and hot dog combos available for $3 each. This event is open to public participation, but participants must be at least 21 years of age.
—Tickets are available for the National AARP Convention being held Sept. 21-22 in New Orleans. Call the AARP office, 384-2277, for information.
—Gerry Fabre asks everyone who plans to attend the July 2 AARP to remember the AARP “Outreach and Emergency Aid” program and donate canned goods or make a monetary contribution “to this worthwhile program.”
The meeting ended with gifts being awarded in a random drawing.
