Colonels to host South Alabama
THIBODAUX — After a five-game run last week, the Nicholls State University baseball team will play five more this week, beginning tonight in Thibodaux as the Colonels host the South Alabama Jaguars.
Today’s game will be played at 6:30 p.m. before Nicholls will travel to Southern for a 6 p.m. contest Wednesday.
The Colonels are coming off an interesting week that saw highs and lows, as the team went 2-3, earning a win against Tulane, splitting with Brown during the weekend, while falling to Louisiana-Lafayette and No. 4 LSU to end the week.
The back-to-back losses to ULL and Brown to open the weekend were the first of its kind all year for the club but still was able to snap a long losing skid to Tulane while regrouping to defeat Brown Sunday.
At the plate, Nicholls struggled a bit, hitting just .217 in the five games last week as the team’s overall average dipped to .267 on the year.
The Colonels still got some solid individual performances as Philip Lyons hit .350 with two doubles, while Matt Richard had his second three-RBI game this year against the Bears and Mike Barba reached base safely in his ninth consecutive game to go along with his current four-game hitting streak.
Defensively, the pitching staff is still doing a number on opposing teams during the year as the team’s combined earned run average of 3.00 is currently second in the league. Kory Delange struck out 11 batters in a game following teammate Taylor Byrd, who struck out 10 two weeks ago.
The 11 strikeouts are the most for any Nicholls pitcher since Clint Dempster in 2010 when he struck out what is believed to be a school-record 16 in a single game.
Nicholls is looking to extend its early domination of opponents at home, as Nicholls is 4-1 at Ray E. Didier Field this year, hitting .307 as a group in games in Thibodaux, outscoring visitors 24-12.
South Alabama comes into today’s game at 10-3, sitting in most of the major polls last week until losing two of three to the College of Charleston last weekend.
Still, the Jaguars are hitting .292, scoring double-digit runs in four consecutive games, including 29 against New Orleans Feb. 22.
Nicholls won both games against the University of South Alabama last season, as South Alabama holds a 30-14 advantage in all-time meetings.
The Colonels close out their series against the Southern Jaguars Wednesday night, as Nicholls defeated Southern 11-1 in February.
Since that loss the Jaguars sport a 5-5 record but began play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference during the weekend with a 2-1 series win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Nicholls will return home to host a three-game series against Sacred Heart University Friday.
Today’s game will be aired on KTIB 640 AM and on ThibodauxOnline.com, while Wednesday’s game will be televised on Cox Sports Television live from Baton Rouge, with the game also airing just on ThibodauxOnline.com.
