UH to face Vanderbilt in bowl game
The University of Houston, who accepted an invitation to play in the BBVA Compass Bowl Sunday, will face Vanderbilt from the SEC in the game.
The game in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 4 will kickoff at noon and be carried nationally on ESPN and ESPN Radio.
The BBVA Compass Bowl will mark the first meeting between Houston and Vanderbilt.
The Cougars are 40-79-4 all-time vs. SEC opponents and 1-1 in bowl games against the conference. The University of Houston defeated Auburn, 36-7, in the 1969 Bluebonnet Bowl while falling to South Carolina 44-36 in the 2006 Liberty Bowl.
“We are excited to accept an invitation to the BBVA Compass Bowl and look forward to making the trip to Birmingham,” Houston head coach Tony Levine said in a university release. “Knowing that we will be facing a formidable opponent in Vanderbilt is a great challenge and one that our program is looking forward to. The setting will provide a great atmosphere for our student-athletes and our fans.”
The BBVA Compass Bowl marks Houston’s 22nd bowl appearance and its eight bowl game in the last 11 seasons. Houston won its last bowl game, Levine’s first game as head coach, when it defeated Penn State 30-14 in the 2012 TicketCity Bowl on Jan. 2, 2012.
The Cougars are 9-11-1 all time in their previous 21 bowl appearances.
“We are very grateful for the invitation extended to The University of Houston from the BBVA Compass Bowl, and we are looking forward to spending time in Birmingham. Bowl games are a great reward and experience for well-deserving student-athletes, and we know with the hospitality the BBVA Compass Bowl and the City of Birmingham provide, this will be no exception,” University of Houston Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades said in a university release. “It will be a great challenge to face Vanderbilt, and I look forward to our passionate fan base making an impact in the support of our student-athletes and our program.”
Houston enters the BBVA Compass Bowl with an 8-4 record, including a 5-3 mark in The American Athletic Conference. The University of Houston finished fourth in its inaugural season in The American.
