Nicholls baseball’s First Pitch banquet set for Feb. 8

Staff Report

On Feb. 8, the Nicholls State University baseball team will hold a big day of festivities as the club hosts the Alumni Game at Ray E. Didier Field, followed by the First Pitch Banquet at Cypress Columns later that evening.
In recent years, the Alumni Game and First Pitch Banquet have served as the last preseason events for the squad as they will embark on the 2014 season the next week with a three-game set against the University of Houston Cougars on Feb. 14.
As in years past, the event will begin Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. with the playing of the Old Timers Game and will be followed by the Alumni Game at around noon.
The Old Timers Game will be six innings at Ray E. Didier Field, while the Alumni versus the 2014 Colonels will go at least seven innings. There will be postgame food and drinks provided at 4 p.m., with enough time to make it to the First Pitch Banquet a few hours later.
To participate in the Old Timers and Alumni games, a $25 fee will be charged. It will help cover costs for jerseys, caps, food and drinks. Baseball pants must be provided by participants.
Then at 7 p.m., the First Pitch Banquet will begin at Cypress Columns in Gray, featuring a silent auction, dinner and head coach Seth Thibodaux and the coaching staff previewing the upcoming season.
The featured speaker for the main event that Saturday night will be former University of Southern California and Nicholls assistant football coach Ed Orgeron. Orgeron, known as one of the best college recruiters in the nation, has more than 27 years of coaching experience, with stops at Northwestern State, Syracuse, Miami and Ole Miss, among others. The Galliano native starred at Southland rival Northwestern State for four years on the defensive line before moving into the coaching ranks in 1984 at his alma mater.
Tickets for the First Pitch Banquet are $60 for the public and $30 for alumni of the Colonel baseball program. A table of 10 is available for $500.
