LSU Eunice softball team ranked No. 1
The LSU Eunice softball team will begin defense of its national championship as the No. 1 team in the country in the NJCAA Division II Softball Preseason Poll released Monday.
The Lady Bengals enter 2014 coming off a 62-5 record with their second national championship in program history.
The 2013 squad set a new high for most victories in a season as well as two different program-best winning streaks, first putting together 22 consecutive victories before rolling off 27 straight to close out the regular season and take into postseason play.
The Lady Bengals also broke records in several team categories, including doubles (153), triples (17), RBIs (432), and runs scored (525), while their team batting average of .365 tied the program record as well.
“It’s great to see that your hard work has been recognized,” head coach Andy Lee said. “We know that the real challenge will be defending the championship now, and that work has already started.”
LSU Eunice has some familiar company at the top of the rankings, with 13 of the 20 teams in the preseason rankings all playing in the NJCAA National Championship Tournament in 2013.
The Lady Bengals open their 2014 season Monday, as they travel to play six games in two days in the Galveston College Classic Feb. 3-4.
The squad opens their home schedule Feb. 12 when it hosts Alvin Community College in a doubleheader, with the first game set for a 1 p.m. start.
The 2014 squad features a Tri-City area graduate, Berwick High alum and infielder Abigail Ohlin.
