City waste handler promises changes

Progressive Waste Solutions—the latest name of the waste handler under contract in the City of Franklin—is promising improvements to its service again.

Roddie Matherne told the city council Tuesday that there has been a backlog since February in truck manufacturing, and the expected new truck has not yet arrived. He hopes it will be in within the next few weeks “and hopefully eliminate some of the leaking problems we’ve had.”

Councilman Chuck Autin had called the waste handler on the floor to complain about garbage trucks spilling rancid water throughout the city, including in front of his downtown restaurant.

Matherne said, “I apologize for the service we’ve been issuing. It’s been rough on us with these older trucks.”

Autin said he showed photos of the leakage, and ruined a pair of pants trying to clean up the spillage on the street. “They’re leaking on pretty much every street in Franklin,” he said. “We can’t continue to have this. I’ve had customers get out of their car and then leave.”

Matherne urged Autin or anyone else to call and the company will go out to clean up the mess.

Autin said Progressive did fix some of the damage they’ve done around town, including historic brickwork and a bent traffic sign.

Councilman Dale Rogers said he’s also received leakage complaints, in some cases flowing down residential driveways.

Councilman Joe Garrison noted that residents near the Progressive site on Tenth Street also complained of smell, and reminded Matherne to keep the grass cut. He said he would.
