City improving drainage, roads at cemetery

MORGAN CITY, La. — Workers with the city’s public works department are working to make improvements to the Morgan City Cemetery to provide better drainage and roads for visitors to the cemetery.

The city has been working on Mausoleum Road, which runs through the cemetery, digging drainage ditches along the side of the road, for the past three or four weeks, said city public works superintendent Jean Paul Bourg.

City workers are working on the cemetery’s drainage system so people can access from the road to the graves without having to walk through water, Bourg said.

“Whenever Boo came into office, he initiated this … One of his campaign promises was to do something with the cemetery with the drainage and the roads,” Bourg said.

City workers installed drainage piping that is then covered by limestone and, finally, dirt and grass will be planted over the top.

“We dug out the drainage, and then after we dug the drainage, we realized it would be a good idea to close this in, cover the drainage and put culverts in it with catch basins,” Bourg said.

Workers are constructing drainage boxes at the end of the piping out of cement with steel grating on top, so they will last a long time, Bourg said.

Work is also being planned to patch bad areas of the road with asphalt, and the worst areas of the road will be torn up to have a better limestone foundation put underneath the road, he said.

Bourg talked with cemetery supervisor Brett Landry to find out what areas of the cemetery had the worst drainage problems.

Bourg expects work to continue on Mausoleum Road for about another week, he said. They plan to dig some more drainage ditches toward the back of the cemetery, he said.

The city may continue to work on other parts of the cemetery once they finish the areas they are working on, Bourg said.
