Centerville Lady Bulldogs earn first-ever state playoff victory
CENTERVILLE — Paced by the outstanding play of their three seniors players pitcher Carrie Hebert, shortstop Summar White and first baseman Brooke Boudreaux, the No. 16-seeded Centerville Lady Bulldogs posted their first-ever State Class B playoff victory over the No. 17 seeded Simpson Lady Broncos here Monday in the opening round game of the State Class B pairings.
Centerville Coach Kathleen Crochet couldn’t contain her excitement for her program’s first-ever state softball victory.
“It’s history and amazing for me and these girls,” Crochet stated. “It shows the hard work from four years back when we were 0-12 to now when we are 21-2. Our hard work paying off is really paying off.”
Centerville’s three seniors _ Hebert, White, Boudreaux _ stepped up in dramatic fashion to help propel the Lady Bulldogs to the hard-fought victory and the first softball state playoff victory.
“Our seniors have been phenomenal all year and our team has played together all year. Our three seniors really stepped up this year and this game!” Crochet said.
Centerville’s next outing will be a road contest at No.1 Glenmora on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Hebert earned the mound victory while White triggered a two-run inning to give Centerville a lead with Boudreaux lining a double in the Lady Bulldogs’ four-run eruption along with a pair of putouts in the top half of the seventh to seal the victory. Hebert also belted a two-run double to help herself to the thrilling victory.
Centerville pitcher Carrie Hebert collected yet another mound victory while hurling the Lady Bulldogs to the 5-3 bidistrict victory. Hebert worked all seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
While trailing 2-1 in the bottom half of the fifth inning, White and Boudreaux made their presence felt with clutch hits, sending the Lady Bulldogs outfront by a 5-2 margin.
Centerville’s Victoria Theriot led off the inning with a single to centerfield. White then followed with a bunt single which was followed by an errant throw to first base. On the miscue both Theriot and White circled the base paths crossing home plate, giving Centerville a 3-2 advantage. Centerville’s Boudreaux then followed with a double of her own before Taylor Saucier took a short stroll to first base, putting runners in scoring position.
Hebert seized the opportunity to help her own cause as she blasted a two-run double, delivering Boudreaux and Saucier, handing the Centerville Lady Bulldogs a 5-2 lead of which they would not relinquish.
Top hitters for Centerville were: Summar White, 1 for 3, run; Brooke Boudreaux - 2 for 3, double, single, 2 runs; Taylor Saucier, 1 for 2, single, run; Carrie Hebert, 1 for 2, double, 3 RBI; Ashton Landry, 1 for 3, single and Victoria Theriot, 1 for 3, single.
