CCHS rally falls short in 9-7 loss to Berwick

Berwick High School jumped out to a 5-0 lead but had to hold on to defeat Central Catholic, 9-7, at the Bayou Vista Community Center on Thursday.

CCHS responded from the 5-0 deficit with two runs in the third, while both teams scored in the sixth, Berwick one, and CCHS two, for a 6-4 Berwick lead.

The Lady Panthers responded with three runs in the top of the seventh for a 9-4 advantage, but CCHS countered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and ended the game with the bases loaded.

In the win, Berwick committed six errors, while CCHS had four miscues.

Hayley Girard led Berwick with a 4-for-5 performance with a run and a stolen base, while Megan Fegenbush finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Abigail Ohlin finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, a stolen base and a run.

Other BHS hitters included Amber Girard, 1-for-4 with two runs, a stolen base and an RBI; Alexis Kates, 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs; Shelby Bergeron, 1-for-2 with a run, a stolen base and an RBI; and Maria Trevino, 1-for-2.

On the mound, Fegenbush (7-6) pitched a complete game and surrendered seven runs on four hits and struck out three

For CCHS, Megan Landry led the way at the plate with a homer, two RBI and a run, while Kimberly Russo recorded two hits, an RBI and a run.

Also for CCHS, Brittany Longman recorded a single, a double, an RBI and a run and Celine Flores had a single.

On the mound, Landry (6-6) also went the distance and surrendered nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits. She walked one and struck out six.

Berwick (9-8, 2-1) will resume District 9-3A play Saturday when it hosts Kaplan. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Central Catholic (9-8) will return to action when it participates in the Lutcher Tournament Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Lady Eagles will face Ellender at 3 p.m., while on Sunday, the squad will meet Beau Chene at 1 p.m. and Ursuline at 3 p.m.

Lumberjills win district game against Abbeville

The Patterson Lumberjills picked up a dominating, 16-2, run-rule victory against Abbeville in five innings on the road Thursday.

After falling behind 2-1 after an inning of play, the Lumberjills scored 15 unanswered runs in the run-rule victory, including eight in the top of the fifth inning.

Carissa Fontenot earned the win for PHS. In five innings, she surrendered two earned runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out three.

At the plate, Caitlyn Fontenot led the ’Jills with a 3-for-4 performance with two doubles, five RBIs and a run, while Carli McIntyre added a 2-for-3 performance with a triple, four RBIs, two runs and two walks.

Others collecting hits for Patterson included Rachel Easley, 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs; Madi Morris, 1-for-3, two RBIs and a run; Jordon Aucoin, 2-for-3, an RBI, a walk and two runs; Rebecca Taylor, 2-for-2, three runs and two walks; Grace Beadle, 1-for-3, an RBI, three runs and a walk; and Arianna Ross, 1-for-3 with a walk.

The Lumberjills resume play when they participate in the Catholic High-New Iberia tournament today and Saturday.
