Staff Report

FRANKLIN — The Central Catholic Lady Eagles clinched the District 8-1A softball title Thursday with a 6-4 win against Hanson.

In the win, the Lady Eagles connected on three home runs, including one by Bridgette Swan. It was her second home run in as many games.

Swan finished 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and a run.

Teammates Celine Flores and Amanda Barron also connected on home runs. Flores finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs, while Barron completed her day 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run.

Other top contributors included Kimberly Russo and Megan Landry, each 2-for-5.

“I am very proud of my team for their district championship,” Central Catholic coach Joe Russo said. “Hanson is a great team, but we just out-hit them tonight. We have been working very hard on hitting all year, and it has paid off.”

Landry earned the complete-game win as she surrendered four runs — three earned — on four hits and struck out nine.

“We also got a stellar performance from Megan Landry on the mound. She competes every pitch and works well with Elizabeth Garber (catcher),” Russo said.

While Hanson took a 1-0 lead after two innings, Central Catholic responded with two runs each in the third and the fourth for a 4-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Hanson plated a run in their fourth-inning at bat and two more in the sixth to tie the game at 4 before the Lady Eagles pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh.

Central Catholic (22-5 overall) will return to action today against Ascension Catholic at 5 p.m. They also will face St. Charles Catholic Monday. Russo called the two opponents “two respectable teams that should help prepare us for playoff action.”
