CCHS begins state tourney play Monday in Monroe

MORGAN CITY — In 2012, it was all girls and no boys at state for Central Catholic.
This year, it’s a combination of both when looking at the qualifiers from Central Catholic for the Division 5 state tournament, which begins Monday at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
While Kate Patterson and Emma Thomas will return to state this year, Zachary Osburn, Gage Theriot and Connor Hebert will join them this year on the boys’ squad.
A year ago, Thomas advanced to state as a singles’ opponent, while Patterson competed with teammate Jaclyn Garber in doubles’ play.
On the return trip, Patterson and Thomas will team as doubles partners.
Last week, the duo finished as runners-up in the region to the top team from Metairie Park Country Day.
On the boys’ side, Osburn is headed to state competition in singles’ play after falling in the state semifinals a year ago, while the doubles’ team of Theriot and Hebert fell in the semifinals.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles both finished tied for second with Ascension Christian in regional play, but because Ascension Christian had a regional champion, they took second place.
As for the girls’ experience, Rhodes said he hopes it will excite his qualifiers for this year and make them “a little bit more wary of the competition level at state.
“A large percentage of the state tournament is dependent upon the draw and the good news is, Emma and Kate, because they made it to the finals of the regionals, they’ll probably be seeded and get a much better draw than the draws we had last year,” Rhodes said.
On the boys’ side, the Eagles have two eighth graders in Connor Hebert and Gage Theriot qualified for state.
“That’s always fun and ex-citing when you have kids that young that qualify for the state tournament, and it is fun to look forward to the future, especially with those kids being so young,” he said.
Osburn is a junior this year.
