Canoe trip again part of Bayou Teche Bear Fest

The Friends of Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge are hosting a Canoe Adventure on Saturday, April 21 in conjunction with the Bayou Teche Bear Festival in Franklin.

“The one day paddle will be a guided, easy pace tour that is perfect for families wishing to explore the beauty of the refuge,” said Gail Garcia, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Friends group.

Tours are being offered at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and paddlers will meet at the Fairfax Foster Bailey Boat Landing in Franklin. A pre-registration fee of $15 per canoe is required to reserve a canoe and must be received by April 18. The limit is two adults and one child over age 6 per canoe. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants must be 10 years and older to be allowed to paddle the canoe.

Participants must arrive at the landing a half hour before their designated trip where they will caravan to the site.

“When registering for the canoe trip, please remember that you need a paddle partner so that there are at least two people per canoe,” Garcia said. “Early registration is recommended due to a limited number of canoes.”

Canoes reserved will include paddles and a life jacket that fits around your neck. Persons with a more comfortable life jacket may bring their own. Participants are reminded to bring sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, water, camera, and snacks.
