Brown is District 8-1A MVP; Ree Case named top coach

Staff Report

MORGAN CITY — For the past five years, the most valuable player of the Central Catholic boys’ basketball team’s district was the squad’s Lloyd Grogan.

With Grogan graduating in 2012, that meant a new MVP would be crowned at the conclusion of the 2012-13 season.

It didn’t mean it couldn’t have come from the same school, though.

Dontrell Brown, who was Grogan’s teammate in high school, was named MVP on the All-District 8-1A hoops team released recently, while teammate Josh Singleton also was selected to the first team and their coach, Ree Case, was name district coach of the year.

The 6-foot, 3-inch Brown recorded per game averages of 22.5 and 8.5 rebounds during the 2013 district season.

Singleton, a 5-foot, 10-inch senior, was named to the top squad after totaling averages of 15.2 points and 7.6 assists.

Case was named the district’s top coach after leading his squad to an 8-0 mark in district. The Eagles outscored their opponents, on average, by 36.3 points per contest.

Other first-team selections included Ascension Episcopal’s Lucas Duhon and Skye Mejia, and Vermilion Catholic’s Joey Faulk.

Central Catholic placed three on the second team, senior Lamar Grogan and juniors Nicholas Case and Tyler Hoffpauir. Grogan, the brother of Lloyd Grogan, averaged a double-double with 10.2 points per contest and 11.1 rebounds. Case averaged 13.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game, while Hoffpauir had per game averages of 14.1 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Other second-team selections included Hanson’s Royce Norton and Gueydan’s Marquis Victoria.

Central Catholic senior David Brown, junior Brent Green, freshman Stefano Guarisco and eighth-grader Jalen Johnson all were honorable mention all-district selections.
