Bourgeois selected to head state medical examiners

The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners recently elected a longtime Morgan City family physician as its new president.

Melvin G. Bourgeois was elected to a two-year term as president during the board’s Dec. 5 meeting.

Other officers elected included Dr. Kim E. LeBlanc of Breaux Bridge, vice president; and Dr. Kweli J. Amusa of Slidell, secretary-treasurer.

Bourgeois replaced Dr. Mark H. Dawson of Rayne as president.

Bourgeois was nominated by the Louisiana Academy of Family Practice and appointed to the board March 23, 2000, by then-Gov. Mike Foster and reappointed in 2002. Then-Gov. Kathleen Blanco reappointed him in 2006, and Gov. Bobby Jindal reappointed him on Jan. 1, 2010, with this final term expiring on Dec. 31, 2013.

He is St. Mary Parish’s first physician to be appointed to the board.

A New Orleans native and 1953 Jesuit High School graduate, Bourgeois earned a bachelor of science in pharmacy at Loyola University, College of Pharmacy, in New Orleans in May 1957. He graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in May 1961 and completed a rotating internship at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans and a family practice residency at Lafayette Charity Hospital before moving to Morgan City.

Bourgeois has been a member of the American Academy of Family Practice and the Louisiana Academy of Family Practice since 1965.

In August, he was elected as a district director for the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians.

Bourgeois also was a diplomat of the American Academy of Family Practice from 1976-1992. He is also a member of the American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, and a past member of the St. Mary Parish Medical Society and the Louisiana State Medical Society.

He served on the Board of Commissioners of St. Mary Parish Hospital Service District 2, overseeing the former Lakewood Hospital — now Teche Regional Medical Center — and has been chief of staff several times.

Bourgeois served as secretary of the Louisiana Academy of Family Practice in 2009 and currently is certified as a medical review officer by MRO Certification Council. He is a senior FAA medical examiner and has been assistant coroner of St. Mary Parish since 1990.

Bourgeois served his country in the U.S. Navy, where he was a lieutenant commander, serving from 1966-68 as clinical medical director of the Eighth Naval Sup-port Activity and the Eighth Naval District, which comprised five states. He was honorably discharged as commander.

He was a member of Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force for 20 years in various command positions, and in search and rescue operations as a senior pilot.

In January 1993 he and his son, Dr. Robert M. Bourgeois, opened Bourgeois Medical Clinic in Morgan City, where he continues to practice. They were honored for outstanding achievement by the St. Mary Parish Chamber of Commerce as Business of the Year in 1997.

Bourgeois and his wife, Geri, are the parents of six children.
