MORGAN CITY, La. -- Stephensville’s Josh Broussard was the high point leader going into Sunday’s Super Stock final race.

But, the fact that he was competing for the Deep South Racing Association’s world championship in front of a hometown crowd added to the intensity of the event.

“Baby Josh,” as he’s known to the racing crowd, took second while his longtime friend and sometime adversary Caleb “Curley” Howard, 32, of Morgan City took third.

“We race against each other, but we’re really good friends,” Howard explained.

Broussard, 23, and Howard placed behind Jed Angelle of Arnaudville during the DRSA ¼-Mile Outboard Drag Boat Racing World Racing Championship event held at Russo’s Landing in Morgan City over the weekend.

“For us, this is a hometown race, and we want to put on a good show for the hometown crowd,” Broussard said.

“We race out of the same shop,” Broussard added.

Evolution Marine in Morgan City sponsors both men, along with several other racers in the event. While both said it didn’t add to their rivalry, it does add to the excitement when they do well.

Melissa Kiser and Kathy Pope, both wives of racers and both from Shreveport, explained that the Morgan City race was the fifth and final in the DRSA circuit for the year. While Kiser had been to all of the races this year, the Morgan City edition was Pope’s first.

“So far there seems to be a lot of delays, and they tell me that’s unusual,” Pope said Friday. She explained the races had to be stopped several times to remove hyacinths or let regular boat traffic through. The hyacinth problem later was remedied with hundreds of feet of donated boom, according to local race director Marvin Catrett.

Kiser said Russo’s Landing was “probably the best site” she’d been to this year.

Some 64 boats competed in the finals for the eight classifications Sunday.

The winners, listed in placing order, were:

—Performance Bass & Ski: Tyler Whitehead of Texas, Marty Alexia of Lafitte and Edward “Shorty” Aucoin Jr. of Morgan City.
