Big plays propel VCHS past HMS Tigers in district opener
Big plays helped the Vermilion Catholic Eagles post a 42-0 win over the Hanson Memorial Tigers in the District 8-A opener Thursday at McCloskey Field.
VCHS (5-1, 1-0) scored on runs of 65 and 61 along with a 59 yard touchdown pass to build a huge lead over the Tigers (2-4, 0-1).
In the opening moments of the first quarter, VCHS’ Mike Campbell raced 65 yards for a touchdown with 11:45 showing on the clock. Kicker Emile Trahan added the extra point, giving the Eagles a 7-0 advantage.
A short time later, Campbell hit paydirt from three yards out prior to Trahan booting the extra point as the Eagles moved to a 14-0 advantage.
Dustin Desormeaux’s yard run enabled VCHS to grab a 20-0 lead at the half.
Vermilion Catholic added a 61-yard scoring jaunt by Joey Faulk along with a 59-yard aerial strike from Brennan Gallet to jump outfront by a 35-0 advantage.
Gallet capped the scoring with a 5 yard TD run in the third quarter.
VCHS’ Mike Campbell finished the night with seven carries for 129 yards and two TDs. Joey Faulk carried three times for 73 yards and 1 score.
Hanson’s Collin Broussard had 24 carries for 62 yards while Drake Businelle carried five times for 22 yards. Royce Norton ran four times for 23 yards while Cameron Stovall ran seven times for 12 yards with Drake Rodriguez rushing seven times for five yards. Jeffrey Soulis carried three times, picking up 12 yards while Beau LeBlanc had one carry for three yards.
Hanson’s Beau Barrilleaux went 8 for 13 for 71 yards while Drake Rodriguez was 0 for 1.
HMS’ Royce Norton caught four passes for 44 yards while Drake Businelle hauled in two passes for 8 yards. Tate Granger made one catch for 10 yards with Beau LeBlanc grabbed one pass for 9 yards.
Hanson will travel to face the Berwick Panthers next Thursday.
