BHS girls' tennis wins team title
From Staff Reports
Berwick freshman Claire Parsiola said she wanted to send her doubles partner and sister, senior Anne Lee Parsiola, out on a positive note.
Parsiola got exactly what she wanted and more.
The Parisola sisters won the Division III state title, while the Berwick girls’ squad accumulated enough points to win the team title during the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Division III state tennis tournament Thursday in Monroe.
The Parisolas defeated Lauren Badeaux and Natalie Bernard of E.D. White, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to win the state title.
“It was great for the Parsiolas to win the doubles, and they worked very, very hard to get there,” BHS tennis coach Charlotte Menard said.
While Berwick tied E.D. White for the team title with eight points, because Berwick defeated E.D. White in the doubles’ finals, they were awarded the title.
“As far as competition, they (E.D. White) were the closest to us,” Menard said. “Our girls played very, very hard. The heat was never a factor. They were in shape. They just played every match fresh and new and with a great attitude.”
Menard said she knew at the beginning of the season that her team had the ability to win a title.
“We had some younger players, but I think from the beginning of the season we had the expectation and we told the girls (we) had the opportunity to do this,” she said.
The Parsiolas began their run to the championship Wednesday with a 6-0, 6-1 win against a squad from Loyola Prep followed by a win against Bailey Monsour and Grace Anne McGill of Loyola, 6-0, 6-1.
They then beat Leah McDonald and Emily Granger of Loyola, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, the squad beat Megan Monier and Mary Walton of E.D. White.
The Parsiola sisters were not the only ones in their family to excel at state.
Their sister, sophomore Signe Parsiola, advanced to the semifinals in singles competition before falling to the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Basia Walters of West Feliciana, 5-7, 6-4, 4-6.
She advanced to the semifinals after knocking off Colleen Barnett of Loyola Prep, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Morgan Berthelot of E.D. White in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Also in singles’ competition, senior Morgan Mitchell advanced to the quarterfinals where she fell to Ryan Barham of Loyola Prep, 7-5, 2-6, 2-6.
She advanced to the quarterfinals after knocking off Pilar Boronat from Avoyelles in her opening match, 6-2, 6-3.
The Berwick doubles’ team of Carolyn and Mary Margaret Sanford also won a match in state as they knocked off Aimee Brein and Chloe Collins from E.D. White before falling to the defending state champions, Natalie Benson and Laura Schmid of Notre Dame.
