Berwick's garbage fees rising

Berwick leaders introduced an ordinance to raise garbage rates from $18.50 to $19 monthly and passed an ordinance creating a maintenance servitude west of Renwick Subdivision.

Garbage rates are being increased because of increases in cost brought by SWeeDee and are occurring in communities across the parish served by the company. A public hearing will be held on the ordinance in January after which the ordinance will be up for adoption.

The maintenance servitude was introduced in November, and a public hearing was held during Tuesday's meeting of the city council during which no comment was made. The ordinance allows for a 15-foot servitude adjacent to the western boundary of the subdivision for the maintenance of drainage in the area.

In other action, the council:

—Approved 10 liquor licenses for 2012.

—Reappointed Lily Rebardi to the Berwick Housing Authority board.

—Learned Utah and California streets are being overlaid by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. It is believed the project will be complete before Christmas.

The entire council was present for the meeting Tuesday.
