Berwick survives Erath rally

BERWICK — Berwick had as much as a 7-1 lead in its District 9-3A opener Tuesday and needed every bit of it and more as it fought off a late Erath comeback in a 9-8 win Tuesday.

While Berwick led 5-1 after an inning and 7-1 after three innings, the Lady Bobcats began to get back into the game in the sixth inning as the Lady Cats scored three runs.

While Berwick plated two runs in the bottom of the frame for a 9-4 advantage, Erath responded with four runs in the top of the seventh for the close final.

Rennan Delatte earned the win as she pitched five complete innings (she faced four batters in the sixth), and surrendered four runs on four hits with three walks and struck out four.

In two innings of relief, Shelby Bergeron surrendered four runs on three hits. She hit one batter and walked one.

Celeste Bowers finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Lady Panthers, while Abigail Ohlin finished 1-for-4 with a run, two stolen bases and two RBIs.

Berwick (7-3 overall, 1-0 in district) will return to action Thursday when it faces Patterson High in Patterson in a District 9-3A contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Patterson falls to

North Vermilion

The Patterson Lumberjills suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday, a 15-2 loss in five innings to North Vermilion in the Lumberjills’ District 9-3A opener.

Carissa Fontenot, who finished 1-for-1 with an RBI, suffered the loss on the mound.

Other top Patterson hitters included Tiera Butler, 1-for-2, an RBI; and Rebecca Taylor, 1-for-1 with a run.

“It’s hard to be successful when you give a good team extra outs,” Patterson coach Colby Minton said. “We will have to refocus, come to work on Wednesday, and get ready for another good team on Thursday.”

CCHS’ game postponed

Central Catholic’s District 8-1A opener on the road against Vermilion Catholic Tuesday was postponed due to Vermillion Catholic’s girls’ basketball squad playing in the Class 1A state finals Friday.

The game will be made up March 18.

The Lady Eagles will play rival Morgan City High School today at 5 p.m. at McGee Park.
