Berwick run-rules Patterson in 5 innings

PATTERSON — Berwick High School’s Shelby Bergeron tossed a one-hitter as the Lady Panthers run-ruled Patterson, 14-0, in five innings.

In the complete-game win, Bergeron struck out three and walked one.

Offensively, the Lady Panthers scored three runs each in the first and second innings and four more apiece in the third and fourth frames.

The Lady Panthers pounded out 14 hits and benefited from five Patterson errors.

On defense, the Lady Panthers committed one error.

Hayley Girard finished 4-for-4 with an RBI, three stolen bases and two runs for the Lady Panthers, while teammate Elizabeth Hover recorded a 3-for-4 outing with three RBIs and a run. Other top Berwick hitters included Mattie Gray, 2-for-3, an RBI and two runs; Shannon Theriot, 1-for-2, an RBI, two stolen bases and three runs; and Olivia Gilbert, 1-for-3, an RBI and three runs.

For Patterson, Grace Beadle finished 1-for-2.

The loss was the second run-rule defeat for Patterson this week as the squad fell to North Vermilion Tuesday.

Patterson (9-2 overall, 0-2 in District 9-3A) will continue play this weekend in St. John’s and Plaquemine High’s Bayou Plaquemine Classic. The Lumberjills will play at 4:30 p.m. today against Plaquemine at Plaquemine High; on Saturday at 11 a.m. against St. Michaels at Crescent Bend Park in Plaquemine; and at 4 p.m. against Family Christian at Plaquemine High.

“We have a big tournament this weekend,” Patterson coach Coby Minton said. “We have to put the two games this week behind us and learn from our mistakes. These two losses will make us a better team in the long run if we handle them the right way. I’m confident that our seniors will rally the troops and have us ready to play this weekend.”

Berwick (8-3 overall, 2-0 in District 9-3A) will return to action today when it faces E.D. White at 5:30 p.m. in the Parkview Baptist Tournament.

On Saturday, the Lady Panthers will face Rayne at 1 p.m. and Parkview at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s Class 3A regional round contest in which the Lady Eagles eliminated Berwick from the postseason.

Ellender edges

Morgan City

Ellender scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Morgan City, 3-2, in District 8-4A action Thursday in Houma.

While Ellender plated a run in the top of the first, Morgan City scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning via a two-out, two-run home run by Aliya Green for a 2-1 Morgan City advantage.

However, Ellender responded with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Tyler Hebert pitched another solid game for Morgan City as she surrendered three runs — two earned — on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

At the plate, Green finished 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run; Katelyn Alvarez had a 2-for-3 performance with a double; and Marilynn Bailey was 1-for-4 with two stolen bases.

Morgan City (5-4 overall, 0-1 in district) will return to action today in the Hahnville Tournament. The Lady Tigers will face Ursuline at 6 p.m. and Destrehan and Central Lafourche Saturday at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.

The Ursuline game will be a rematch of last year’s Class 4A bi-district contest in which Ursuline eliminated Morgan City from the postseason.
