Berwick plans party for Tour du Teche end

BERWICK, La. — A “mini-festival” with concerts, cooking, and arts and crafts will be held along the riverfront in Berwick Oct. 7 as the annual Tour du Teche kayak and canoe race concludes.

Berwick Mayor Louis Ratcliff said, “We’re excited. This is our second year. We had a great time last year. We think it will be bigger and better.”

Recently sworn-in town councilwoman Jacki Ackel is involved in the planning of the “Festivities at the Lighthouse” event, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 7.

“The town of Berwick is so appreciative of the organizers of the Tour de Teche for designating our town as the grand finale, the finish line. We are working on a lot of vendors that will come here for this,” Ackel said.

“It’s going to be a good, fun day, arts and crafts, homemade baked goods, sweets and treats, and games and activities for children.”

Town bookkeeper Karen Sehon is also involved in planning for the event.

“The fire department will be out here selling jambalaya and refreshments,” Sehon said. “We’re getting local vendors that do homemade arts and crafts to come out and have booths.”

The old red lighthouse in Berwick is the finish line for the Tour de Teche race, which starts Oct. 5 in Port Barre and concludes in Berwick two days later.

Participants in the race will emerge from the Bayou Teche locks north of Berwick and come down the western portion of Berwick Bay, with the boats coming out of the water at the Oregon Street boat landing, Ratcliff said.

He also spoke of the efforts of others in making the “Festivities at the Lighthouse” event possible.

“Karen and Jackie have done a wonderful job preparing for the final day at the end of the race,” Ratcliff said.

The organizers are seeking vendors for the event. There are no vendor fees. Anyone interested in participating should contact Sehon at 985-384-8858 or for information.
