Berwick, Morgan City to meet in jamboree
By GEOFF STOUTE
MORGAN CITY — Berwick and Morgan City will square off Friday night in an eastern St. Mary Parish matchup in the portion of the St. Mary Parish Jamboree that is being played at Tiger Stadium.
The two teams will meet in the nightcap, expected to begin around 7:30 p.m.
Earlier, West St. Mary will face Hanson at 6 p.m.
Morgan City coach Dennis Lorio said, from film study, he has seen that offensively, Berwick runs option and midline and utilizes some motion.
He also noted they completed some passes to their tight end and their quarterback was fast.
“They were playing hard,” Lorio said. “We’re both in the same position. We’re trying to get our program on the uprise.”
On defense, Lorio said Berwick used a 3-4 scheme and is aggressive and pursues the ball well and used a lot of slants.
In Berwick, coach Craig Brodie said Morgan City looks “very athletic,” and he said like teams do in scrimmages, Morgan City didn’t show a lot.
“They didn’t get in a whole lot of formations offensively. They didn’t run very many plays,” he said.
Just as he does with his team on offense and defense, Brodie said he expects the Tigers to show more when the two squads meet Friday evening.
Of his offense, Lorio said his squad must establish a running game and subsequently can use play-action and other passing.
Brodie said he was looking to see how his squad handled the “game situation” as well as putting his special teams’ unit on the field in a game setting.
Lorio also was interested in seeing how his special teams performed.
“(We’re) real behind on that, but we’ve put in some work on that.”
Lorio hopes special teams can be an advantage for the Tigers to swing close games in their favor.
Friday’s games are sponsored by B&G Foods (title sponsor) and Urgent Care of Morgan City (associate sponsor).
