Berwick to host Erath
Vermilion Catholic may have given Berwick the blueprint to beat Erath Friday when Erath travels to Berwick for a District 9-3A contest.
VC’s Jacoby Davis, the state’s Class A MVP, recorded 314 rushing yards (a school record) on 22 carries last week in the Eagles’ 33-14 win against the Bobcats (1-2).
“It would be nice if we could get that kind of production,” Berwick head coach Craig Brodie Sr. said. “But we will take whatever they give us.”
Davis reeled off carries of 20, 71, 15, 41, 63, 68 and 11 yards in Vermilion Catholic’s victory.
Berwick’s rushing attack has been anemic, however, with Raheem Colar leading the team this season with 38 yards and Josh Engleton adding 36.
“We will run more two back sets this week,” Brodie said. “And we’ve also added a couple new formations. But the key for us is to be more consistent.”
The Panthers had a tough outing last week, losing to Tri-City rival Central Catholic 41-8.
Berwick (0-2) started strong, scoring a touchdown on a 60-yard pass play from quarterback Bobby Boudreaux to Nick Osburn on its first possession for a 6-0 lead.
For the year, Boudreaux has competed 12-of-42 passes for 187 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.
But the Panthers could not stop the Eagles from scoring, while the Panthers’ offense struggled to move the ball.
“We were disappointed with the way we played Friday,” Brodie said. “But we’ve had a good week of practice.”
Erath also started fast last week, driving 86 yards in seven plays on its opening drive. The Bobcats Coy Clostio’s and quarterback Ty Bares’ running ability on the drive. On the drive, Bares had one 42-yard jaunt, while he capped the drive with a 2 yard touchdown.
Despite the fast start, the score was Erath’s last until late in the final quarter when VC had totaled 33 points.
Bares was the Bobcats’ offensive leader in the loss with 21 carries for 96 yards. He also completed 10-of-18 passes for 159 yards. Clostio recorded 16 carries for 77 yards, while Aaron Greene snared five passes for 85 yards and Austin Domingues had a reception for 41 yards.
Friday’s game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
