Bayou Vista Garden Club has first 2011-12 meeting
Bayou Vista Garden Club kicked off the 2011-12 season in September with a program highlighting National Garden Club member services and projects.
Vice President Donna Bucci informed fellow members of the variety of products and services available through NGC that are listed in its Member Services Catalog including program ideas and lesson plans, videos, books, jewelry and many other items.
She also outlined NGC President Shirley Nicolai’s projects for 2011-13 — “Protecting Aquatic Ecosystems” and “Planting for Public and Special Places.”
Bucci presented a demonstration illustrating the importance and urgency in identifying and addressing critical water issues at local, state, regional, national and international levels. The planting project focuses on container gardening, gardening with edibles, and continuing the planting of indigenous trees and shrubs. Posters and handouts accompanied the program.
Wildlife Conservation Chairman Sandra Blanco provided illustrations and information on the different species of crayfish, most of which are not on the endangered species list.
Hostesses for the meeting were Janice Verret, Pam Breaux and Mary Myers.
“Growing Together” by Verret and BVGC President Gloria Roy was a creative mass floral design to symbolize Roy’s theme for 2011-13, “Let’s Grow Together.” Included in the design was hibiscus, black pearl, spider lily, canna lily, potato vine, plus other flowers and foliage from the gardens of Roy.
Door prize winner was Myers.
The next BVGC meeting is Oct 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bayou Vista Community Center.
