American Diabetes Month promotes awareness
The American Diabetes Association has launched its annual effort to raise the profile of diabetes with its boldest, most extensive program ever.
American Diabetes Month activities document how the disease affects the lives of millions of Americans and recognizes individuals who are furthering the organization’s movement to stop diabetes.
The Facebook-based effort also asks people to “Raise their Hand to Stop Diabetes” by making a personal pledge to take action against this deadly disease.
For the past 35 years, the association has used the month of November to highlight the devastating impact of diabetes on individuals, communities and the nation as a whole. This year, it will spotlight individuals who are making valuable contributions in the fight to stop diabetes. From outspoken advocates and community leaders to medical professionals and celebrities who battle this disease every day, the stories of triumph and perseverance culminate on Facebook, where anyone can join the cause.
“By 2050, as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes,” explained Beth Mayer-Davis, MSPH, PhD, RD, President, Health Care and Education, American Diabetes Association. “Our goal for this month and beyond is to magnify the presence diabetes holds in the overall American consciousness.”
Each week, during American Diabetes Month, the Association will highlight a specific facet of the ongoing movement to stop diabetes, including those who advocate for rights of people with diabetes, community leaders and organizations developing programs to stop the spread of diabetes, inspirational individuals and groundbreaking research that is changing the future of this disease.
“This is by far the most ambitious American Diabetes Month program we have ever implemented,” added Larry Hausner, Chief Executive Officer, American Diabetes Association. “We are thrilled that so many have joined the cause to stop diabetes, arming us with informative, relevant, and fresh content to share with the public.”
Joining the association in this effort is a long list of supporters, including celebrities like Larry King, professional quarterback Jay Cutler and football analyst Herm Edwards who are sharing their personal stories about living with diabetes, as well as corporate and media supporters who are extending the reach of the "Stop Diabetes" movement.
MSN, a breaking news and online information site from Microsoft, will feature the American Diabetes Association and the “Stop Diabetes” movement at MSN Health during the month of November.
The association, in conjunction with King and the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, has produced a series of interviews and public service announcements featuring Cutler, Edwards, Madi Dodge, the American Diabetes Association Youth Advocate, and Geralyn Spollett, MSN, ANP-CS, CDE, President-elect, Health Care and Education. These videos will be distributed across the association’s and its supporters’ social media channels.
“Living with diabetes is a day-to-day challenge for millions of people like me,” said King. “I hope the stories of Coach Edwards, Jay Cutler, Madi and others like them inspire people to not just get involved, but to recognize the signs of diabetes and the impact this disease has on their families, their communities and our nation as a whole.”
