3 suspicious fires in western St. Mary

An abandoned structure destroyed by fire in the early morning hours Sunday is the third such incident in western St. Mary in the past two months, according to reports from Fire Protection District 11 Chief Clarence Clark.

Clark said the department responded at 2:59 a.m. to the blaze at 100 Railroad Lane. Upon arrival at 3:06 a.m. responders found a single family abandon dwelling with heavy fire and smoke throughout the structure. By 3:45 a.m. the fire was under control.

Fire District 11 responded with 12 firefighters along with four pumpers, one service/tanker and two rescue units. Mutual aid was provided by the Jeanerette, Baldwin and Chitimacha fire departments. In all a total of 22 firefighters responded with 11 fire apparatuses to the emergency call. All units were in back in quarters by 5:45 a.m.

Anyone with information about the suspicious fires is asked to contact the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-828-1960 or the District 11 central station at 337-276-6650. Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office has also been called in to assist with the cases.
