2 arrested for child desertion, bike theft in Bayou Vista
After receiving tips from the public, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office made two arrests in the investigation of a bike theft and possible child desertion, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
Michael Thompson, 28, and Amanda Parker, 23, both of the 3000 block of Allison Street in Morgan City, were arrested at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday for theft and child desertion.
The crime occurred late Sunday afternoon Aug. 18, at The Swamp Skate Park in Bayou Vista, Hebert said. A man and woman are seen on video driving into a parking lot. With them is a small child between the ages of 4 and 6, Hebert said. After sitting under a pavilion at the park for about 20 minutes, the man rode off with the victim’s bicycle, Hebert said.
The woman then drove the SUV to meet the man waiting outside of the park with the bike and left the child unattended at the park, Hebert said. The man and woman loaded the bike in the SUV, returned to the park, retrieved the juvenile, and left the area, Hebert said.
After posting pictures and a description of the crime on Facebook, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office received multiple tips from the public regarding Thompson and Parker’s identity and whereabouts, Hebert said. The two were located at their residence and willingly came to the sheriff’s office in Morgan City.
During the investigation, it was learned that Thompson and Parker’s son was left at the park during the theft. The juvenile is in the care of a guardian. Thompson and Parker were taken to the parish jail and held. No bail is set. The bicycle was recovered.
