10U All-Stars finish runner-up at regional tournament
SULPHUR, La. — The Morgan City 10U All-Stars finished runner-up in the AAA South Regional in Sulphur after losing to Benton 12-2 in the championship game Tuesday.
Morgan City beat East Ouachita North 10-3 in a semifinal game Tuesday to advance to the championship game.
In the championship game, Morgan City lost to Benton after running “out of pitching,” Coach Mark Morell said. Pitchers are limited to 13 innings per tournament, he said.
“It was a pleasure coaching this team. These kids have a lot of heart. They never, ever gave up,” Morell said. “We’ve got a lot of quality baseball players coming up in Morgan City.”
In the semifinal game, Morgan City got 12 hits led by Luke Barbier, who went 4-for-4. Other top hitters included Matthew Mire, 2-for-3; Trent Hillen and Hugh Hamer, both 2-for-4; Jackson Butler, 1-for-2, a home run; and Brett Morell, 1-for-3.
Barbier pitched one inning and gave up two hits. Hillen pitched two innings, giving up no hits and striking out one.
Mire pitched three innings, allowing four hits and struck out one.
In the championship game, Barbier got Morgan City’s only two hits, going 2-for-2. Mire pitched three innings, giving up four hits and striking out one. Morell pitched two innings, allowing four hits and striking out two.
The Morgan City 10U All-Stars finished with an overall record of 12-2-1.
