‘Let’s Go Riding Franklin’ to convene again in March 2012
“Let’s Go Riding Franklin” has been slated to happen again in 2012 when previous and current residents gather for another nostalgic reunion.
An idea that started out as a Facebook chat has gained tremendous interest by people who hold fond memories of the popular Main Street cruise that was part of the lives of many local residents.
“Let’s Go Riding Franklin” has already attracted a large attendance from St. Mary Parish and beyond. The event held in early 2011 was a huge success, and organizers anticipate that the 2012 event will explode in popularity and attendance, said Chad Boutte, founder and organizer.
The next event is set for Saturday, March 17.
“This is an exciting endeavor for Franklin, and it was designed to build a greater sense of community among residents, boost the city’s economy, invite people back to the beautiful City of Franklin and to celebrate spring by gathering together to enjoy food, entertainment, and support Franklin businesses,” Boutte said.
Most importantly, Boutte said, the event will offer a nostalgic trip down memory lane on the historic cruise loop that circles the Sonic Drive-In and the St. Mary Parish Courthouse, he said.
“The ‘Let’s Go Riding Franklin’ reunion is a wonderful, free community event that you can look forward to each year, and several new exciting events have been added,” Boutte said.
Slated for the next ride are:
LET’S GO RIDING FRANKLIN FESTIVAL: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the grounds of Parc sur la Teche on Teche Drive along the bayou.
There will be entertainment, vendors, food, community resources and organizations, and a rock skipping tournament held at Parc sur la Teche. Boat docking is available on a first-come first-served basis. Limited free VIP parking is available on the festival grounds for owners of classic cars.
PARADE: A parade will begin at 3 p.m. across the Willow Street Bridge, proceed over the bridge and turn right on Main Street. It will continue through town to disband at 1812 Main St., the “old A&P parking lot” as it is recalled by riders. Decorated cars, marchers, floats and other community groups and organizations may participate.
LET’S GO RIDING CRUISE: 7 p.m. This is the traditional cruise on the Main Street route circling the Sonic Drive-In and the courthouse. Main Street businesses are encouraged to extend their business hours to benefit from anticipated large crowds cruising through town, Boutte said.
LET’S GO DANCE 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. A dance inside the former Blevins Building on Main Street.
